Doctor Who è una popolare serie televisiva britannica di fantascienza prodotta dalla BBC a partire dal 1963. Narra delle avventure di un viaggiatore del tempo noto come "il Dottore", con trame che vanno dalla fantascienza al racconto gotico.
Il telefilm, con i suoi 27 anni di programmazione (continuativa dal 1963 al 1989 e ripresa nel 2005) e più di 700 episodi (realizzati a colori solo a partire dal 1970) detiene tuttora il record di serie televisiva di fantascienza più longeva. La serie ha offerto anche una delle sigle musicali più ricordate, tanto da finire come estratto nella celeberrima canzone dei Pink Floyd One of These Days.

Storia della Serie

Doctor Who fa la sua comparsa per la prima volta sullo schermo il 23 novembre 1963 alle 17:15 sulla BBC, dopo un anno di discussioni e progetti. Il direttore degli sceneggiati Sydney Newman era il principale responsabile dello sviluppo della serie, assieme al Capo Reparto Sceneggiature Donald Wilson e a C. E. Webber. Lo sceneggiatore Anthony Coburn, il redattore David Whitaker ed il produttore Verity Lambert ebbero anch'essi molta importanza nello sviluppo della serie. Il tema musicale dei titoli fu composto da Ron Grainer e realizzato da Delia Derbyshire della BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Il programma originale era stato creato per un pubblico di famiglie e sarebbe stato prodotto per ventisei anni, con una stagione all'anno, tutte trasmesse sulla BBC. Il calo di ascolti (che pure reiniziarono a migliorare ad un certo punto), una diminuzione di interesse da parte del pubblico e una produzione meno incisiva delle storie portarono nel 1989 alla sospensione del serial da parte di Jonathan Powell, Controller della BBC One. Anche se a tutti gli effetti si trattava di una cancellazione (come la co-protagonista Sophie Aldred afferma nel documentario "Doctor Who: More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS"), la BBC affermò che la serie sarebbe tornata.
Mentre la produzione in Inghilterra era cessata, la BBC confidava di trovare una compagnia di produzione indipendente per rilanciare lo show. Philip Segal, un inglese trapiantato negli USA, dove lavorava per il ramo televisivo della Columbia Pictures, venne contattato dalla BBC e le trattative portarono alla realizzazione di un tv movie in coproduzione fra la Fox, l'Universal Pictures, la BBC e la BBC Worldwide . Nel 1996 venne quindi prodotto quello che doveva essere l'episodio pilota per una miniserie con un nuovo dottore, l'ottavo, Paul McGann, per il mercato statunitense (data di prima trasmissione 20 maggio sulla FOX durante il Tuesday Night Movie Premieres). Nonostante il successo nel Regno Unito (con oltre nove milioni di spettatori), l'accoglienza negli Stati Uniti fu invece più tiepida, e questo impedì la realizzazione di una nuova serie.
Una volta cessata la serie televisiva, la produzione di romanzi e racconti registrati, inizialmente su cassette e successivamente su CD, portò avanti le storie del Dottore e dei suoi compagni, sebbene la canonicità di queste produzioni sia ardentemente discussa dagli appassionati. Il programma televisivo rimase abbandonato fino al 2003: nel settembre di quell'anno la BBC annunciò la produzione interna di nuova serie dopo parecchi anni di tentativi infruttuosi dalla BBC Worldwide di rendere effettiva l'idea di un film. Padre della nuova incarnazione della serie è il produttore e sceneggiatore Russell T. Davies assieme a Julie Gardner, supervisore della valutazione delle serie TV della BBC Wales. La serie è stata venduta in molti altri paesi.
La nuova serie ha debuttato con l'episodio "Rose" sulla BBC il 26 marzo 2005, vedendo inizialmente l'attore Christopher Eccleston nella parte della nona incarnazione del Dottore. Eccleston è stato poi sostituito da David Tennant già nella stagione successiva, la ventottesima, le cui riprese sono iniziate verso la fine del 2005, con l'episodio speciale di Natale The Christmas Invasion ed è stata seguita da tre stagioni, dal 2006 al 2008 inframezzate da episodi speciali di due ore per il giorno di Natale.
A fare da spalla ad entrambi i Dottori, per la prima e la seconda stagione, è stata Billie Piper, nel ruolo della giovane commessa londinese Rose Tyler che per una serie di eventi incontra il nono Dottore e diventa sua compagna di viaggio. Nella terza stagione (ovvero la ventinovesima), la compagna di avventure del Dottore diviene Martha Jones ed è interpretata da Freema Agyeman, nella quarta è invece tornata Donna Noble, interpretata da Catherine Tate, già vista in The Runaway Bride. Nel finale di stagione si sono poi riviste sia Martha che Rose, oltre a un vera e propria "banda" del Dottore, in cui figurano Sarah Jane Smith e i personaggi del Torchwood. La quarta stagione è iniziata il 5 aprile 2008 sulla BBC e si è conclusa nel luglio dello stesso anno. Non saranno prodotti nuovi episodi per il 2009, anche se David Tennant prenderà parte a quattro speciali durante quell'anno: dopo la puntata natalizia del 2008 e le tre puntate più lo speciale natalizio del 2009, una quinta serie integrale è progettata per 2010, con Steven Moffat che sostituirà Davies come produttore esecutivo e direttore della sceneggiature. Sia la versione attuale, iniziata nel 2005, che il tv movie del 1996, sono considerate una continuazione diretta e parte della continuity generale della serie iniziata nel 1963. Ciò differisce da altre serie rilanciate dopo una sospensione prolungata, che sono state ristrutturate (come Battlestar Galactica o la Donna Bionica) o serie che si svolgono nello stesso universo dell'originale ma con un cast del tutto nuovo (per esempio, Star Trek: The Next Generation ed i suoi spin-off).

Il misterioso Dottore (Who in inglese significa "chi") è in realtà un extraterrestre, un Signore del Tempo (Time Lord), ultimo superstite (o forse non ultimo) del pianeta Gallifrey, che compie viaggi spazio-temporali a bordo del TARDIS, un'astronave di enormi dimensioni all'interno, ma che all'esterno presenta l'aspetto dimesso e le dimensioni di una vecchia cabina telefonica della polizia britannica.

I Signori del Tempo assomigliano molto agli esseri umani, ma la loro fisiologia differisce in alcuni aspetti chiave: il Dottore ha due cuori, un sistema respiratorio di esclusione che gli permette di respirare senza aria, ha una temperatura corporea interna di 15-16 gradi centigradi. Ha inoltre una resistenza agli effetti temporali, così come alcune abilità telepatiche.

Periodicamente, allo scadere del suo ciclo vitale o in caso di morte violenta, si rigenerano in un nuovo corpo per un massimo di dodici rigenerazioni. Al momento il Dottore si trova nella sua undicesima incarnazione, avendo subito dieci rigenerazioni, avvenute per cause naturali (dal primo al secondo dottore) o accidentali (dal terzo all'undicesimo). Fa eccezione la seconda rigenerazione, inflittagli come punizione dall'Alto Consiglio dei Signori del Tempo, insieme alla condanna a restare esiliato sulla Terra per un certo periodo, per aver interferito con le leggi del tempo. Inizialmente bandito dal suo pianeta natale, Gallifrey, è stato successivamente eletto presidente dell'Alto Consiglio, rifiutando però la carica per continuare a viaggiare liberamente nello spazio e nel tempo. Ha eletto la Terra come sua seconda patria e vi torna ogni volta che può.

Perché "Doctor Who"?

Nel primissimo episodio, uno dei personaggi si rivolge al Dottore come "Dottor Foreman", essendo questo il cognome di sua nipote Susan e come confermato dalla targa della sua abitazione. Così apostrofato, però, il Dottore ribatte con "Eh? Dottor cosa? Di che parla?" che in Inglese suona "Eh? Doctor Who? What's he talking about?" Questa battuta viene ripetuta più volte nel corso delle varie serie ed è alla base dell'invenzione del titolo. Oltre che in queste situazioni, il Dottore non viene mai chiamato "Doctor Who" (preferisce in genere lo pseudonimo di "John Smith"o semplicemente "Doctor") nel corso della serie. Diversamente, nei film per il cinema con Peter Cushing, che rivisitano il personaggio e il suo universo rispetto alla serie televisiva, il protagonista si riferisce a se stesso effettivamente come "Doctor Who". Nell'episodio della seconda stagione "Finestre nel Tempo", Madame De Pompadour si riferisce al Dottore chiamandolo con quest'appellativo.

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious and eccentric humanoid alien known as the Doctor who travels through time and space in his spacecraft, the TARDIS (an acronym for Time And Relative Dimension In Space), which normally appears from the exterior to be a blue 1950s British police box. With his companions, he explores time and space, faces a variety of foes and rights wrongs.
The programme is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running science fiction television show in the world, and as the "most successful" science fiction series of all time, in terms of its overall broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, iTunes traffic and "illegal downloads". It has been recognised for its imaginative stories, creative low-budget special effects during its original run, and pioneering use of electronic music (originally produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop). The show is a significant part of British popular culture; in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, it has become a cult television favourite and has influenced generations of British television professionals, many of whom grew up watching the series. It has received recognition from critics and the public as one of the finest British television programmes, including the BAFTA Award for Best Drama Series in 2006, and five consecutive wins at the National Television Awards since 2005, in the Drama category.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989. After an unsuccessful attempt to revive regular production with a backdoor pilot in the form of a 1996 television film, the programme was relaunched in 2005, produced in-house by BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff. The first was produced by the BBC and series two and three had some development money contributed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), which was credited as a co-producer. Doctor Who also spawned spin-offs in multiple media, including the current television programmes Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, the standalone K-9 and a single 1981 pilot episode of K-9 and Company.
The Doctor has been played by eleven actors. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show as regeneration, whereby the character of the Doctor takes on a new body and, to some extent, new personality. Although each portrayal is different, and on occasion the various incarnations have even encountered one another, they are all meant to be aspects of the same character. The Doctor is currently portrayed by Matt Smith, who took up the role after David Tennant's final appearance in an episode broadcast on 1 January 2010. A fifth series of the relaunched programme began on 3 April 2010, in which the Eleventh Doctor is accompanied by Amy Pond, portrayed by Karen Gillan.

History


Doctor Who first appeared on BBC television at 17:15 GMT on 23 November 1963, following discussions and plans that had been in progress for a year. The Head of Drama, Sydney Newman, was mainly responsible for developing the programme, with the first format document for the series being written by Newman along with the Head of the Script Department (later Head of Serials) Donald Wilson and staff writer C. E. Webber. Writer Anthony Coburn, story editor David Whitaker and initial producer Verity Lambert also heavily contributed to the development of the series. The series' title theme was composed by Ron Grainer and realised by Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The programme was originally intended to appeal to a family audience. The BBC drama department's Serials division produced the programme for 26 series, broadcast on BBC One. Viewing numbers that had fallen (though comparably increased at some points), a decline in the public perception of the show and a less prominent transmission slot saw production suspended in 1989 by Jonathan Powell, Controller of BBC One. Although (as series co-star Sophie Aldred reported in the documentary Doctor Who: More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS) it was effectively, if not formally, cancelled with the decision not to commission a planned 27th series of the show for transmission in 1990, the BBC repeatedly affirmed that the series would return.

While in-house production had ceased, the BBC was hopeful of finding an independent production company to relaunch the show. Philip Segal, a British expatriate who worked for Columbia Pictures' television arm in the United States, had approached the BBC about such a venture as early as July 1989, while the 26th series was still in production. Segal's negotiations eventually led to a television film. The Doctor Who television film was broadcast on the Fox Network in 1996 as a co-production between Fox, Universal Pictures, the BBC and BBC Worldwide. Although the film was successful in the UK (with 9.1 million viewers), it was less so in the United States and did not lead to a series.
Licensed media such as novels and audio plays provided new stories, but as a television programme Doctor Who remained dormant until 2003. In September of that year, BBC Television announced the in-house production of a new series after several years of unsuccessful attempts by BBC Worldwide to find backing for a feature film version. The executive producers of the new incarnation of the series were writer Russell T Davies and BBC Cymru Wales Head of Drama Julie Gardner. It has been sold to many other countries worldwide (see Viewership).

Doctor Who finally returned with the episode "Rose" on BBC One on 26 March 2005. There have been four further series in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010 and Christmas Day specials in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. The fourth series began on BBC One on 5 April 2008. No full series was filmed in 2009 although four additional specials starring David Tennant were made. A fifth full-length series began in Spring 2010, with Steven Moffat replacing Davies as head writer and executive producer.

The 2005 version of Doctor Who is a direct continuation of the 1963–1989 series, as is the 1996 telefilm. This differs from other series relaunches that have either been reimaginings or reboots (e.g., Battlestar Galactica and Bionic Woman) or series taking place in the same universe as the original but in a different time period and with different characters (e.g. Star Trek: The Next Generation and spin-offs).

The three-digit story numbers are not official designations but are merely to serve as a guide to where the story stands in the overall context of the programme. There is some dispute about, for example, whether to count Season 23's The Trial of a Time Lord as one or four serials, and whether the uncompleted Shada should be included. The numbering scheme used here reflects the current internal practice of describing "Planet of the Dead" (2009) as the 200th story, used in the Doctor Who Magazine's 407th issue. Other sources, such as the Region 1 DVDs of classic Doctor Who serials, use different numbering schemes which diverge after the 108th story, The Horns of Nimon (1979–1980).

The Edge of Destruction was followed by a seven-part adventure, "Marco Polo". In common with many Doctor Who stories of the 1960s the recordings were subsequently wiped. Fortunately, the off-air sound track survives, together with production stills and off-screen photos called "tele-snaps". This presentation is a condensed version of Marco Polo and draws upon many of the surviving photographs from the story.
